Week 6: May 4-8

Monday, May 4

This morning for SEL instead of writing to me, the boys wrote to my Nana, who is 94.  Off in the mail so she has something nice to open.

Seb also made this card and a video for Ms. Police for teacher appreciation week.  They will do one for a teacher each day this week.

HAPPY TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY!!

Today was Mrs. Clinton's turn.  She got a video too.

Seb flew through the math today.  The only thing that still gives him some pause are "the tricky" teens and crossing the century by tens.  So he still struggles to get from 113 to 103 or from 103 to 113.  We just realized that one of these is wrong...he just fixed it with me:  530!!!! ;-)

Playing Transformers by himself (in peace) while Adrian was in his whole-class meeting.  I'm so sorry again that I wasn't there to monitor Seb's small group. It wasn't all Seb's fault--Adrian is always a factor.  :-(

Things are really going to pick up for me at work as the year starts to draw to a close.  I worry a bit about how much time I have to spend on Zoom.  I know it's the same for you.  I can't focus on the boys or on my job most of the time.  :-(

Wednesday, 5/6

Today was your day, Mrs. Sanpietro!!! :-)

Before karate, we made Wacky Cake and so I showed the boys how the vinegar and baking soda is what causes the cake to rise.

The days lately have been so NOT fun.  Boys' work in the morning--rushed--sometimes in between meetings for me.  Then their Zoom meetings and my meetings ALL afternoon.  If I don't get it done in the morning, it's not getting done.  :-(  Art and music take a back seat...even though I think they are super important.  I will try to make up for it on the weekend.  And the weather this week seems to be good when I'm in meetings...and then cloudy and colder after dinner.  I can't wait until summer and we can have our "adventures" for most of the day.  I work during the summer a bit--usually for a few hours a day--but we still manage to get in a ton of fun.  Though who knows what this year will look and feel like.  We usually spend almost every day with my brother and the cousins--he's also a teacher and the cousins are about the same age as the boys.  I'm hoping we'll be able to hang together.  Summer is just over a month away...Yay!

Thursday, May 7

We watched the assigned videos while eating breakfast.  The boys love the number ones and also the Nat Geo videos.  They love learning about geography--especially Seb.

Seb's teacher appreciation note today was to his Abuelita--who was a teacher for over 40 years and even has a school named after her in Mexico!  He comes from a family of educators: his mom and aunt on Carlos's side and on my side: his grandmother, grandfather, uncle, and me.  We love our teachers in this family--there is no one we admire more.  Thank you again for all you do. :-)

Carlos helped him perfect the Spanish and with the punctuation, but it was his note.  I love to see him do so well with Spanish.  Makes Papa super proud, too (of course!).

I made him do Lexia, which he hates.  He finally started to tell me more about why he hates it.  He says he is stuck in level 10 and he never gets past it.  I think it's because he starts units and doesn't finish them, so he has to repeat them.  He also hates it so he doesn't try, and he doesn't try because he hates it.  I emailed Mrs. Silverstein and she told me it was because he was messing up on word chains.  That seemed fishy to me.  So in the afternoon I sat with him. He blew through it. He just needed me with him to do it.  He also messed up a few times simply because he made a mistake when dragging with his finger.  Then it makes you listen to something and do it again and the slowness of it frustrates this impatient kid...(frustrated me too, to be honest!).  Anyway, he DOES know it.  He's almost to level 11 now.  I can't say he likes it now, but we know now why he was "stuck".  I really have been driving home the concept of pride...and doing your best work.  Even if you think no one is watching or no one is sitting with you.  However, he was so grateful to me for helping him.  He was so frustrated.  He sat right next to me--his whole body against mine--when he did it.  He needed the attention and the touch to do it.  He stuck with him the whole afternoon and this morning snuggled me and told me I'm the best mama.  He appreciates when I stick with him when he's frustrated.  I know that.  It's not always easy to remember when he tells me he hates me, but I know it.

In the afternoon we went outside and he played Power Rangers....I love how creative he can be.

Then we had karate...they have a belt test Saturday.

Friday, May 8

Today we did all the homework except the place value robot--we will do it tomorrow and upload it to Class Dojo.

For Mr. Higgins:

We are going to review there, their, and they're... Yikes.  I didn't notice this until just now.

I had to scribe for him this AM to get him to do some math problems.  I've been asking him to do these instead of Happy Numbers which makes him super anxious.  I just want him doing the math and looking the different ways of doing it.  I'd say he's getting it but still has trouble with the century.  I did this and showed it to him and it seemed to help.  I will keep using it and see if it makes a difference.  It might not...and maybe I'm just confusing him more.  But it did seem to help.  It would have helped me...and we are similar.  Fingers crossed!

He knows his globe pretty well and also knows his Central/South American countries and capitals for the most part.

  1. Sebastian, I've fallen behind on checking your work. You have done such a great job all these weeks of pushing through your frustration to get it all done! I know how hard it is at times. It's like that for me too. I know when I finish something, I feel better. I hope you do too. Great job, Sebastian! I'm proud of you!
